25 Jul

The Spice Girls Are Reuniting!

Get ready to spice up your life! Sporty, Scary, Baby, Ginger and Posh are reuniting for a performance at the 2012 Olympics, The Daily Mail reports. This will be their first time singing together since 2008!

Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Prince Harry’s Olympic Schedule

Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Prince Harry are gearing up for the Olympic Games! A royal aide explained: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have been tremendously excited about the Olympics for a long time and want to throw themselves in to the Games and help out as much as they can.” The trio is set to welcome the torch relay to Buckingham Palace on Thursday, the day before the opening ceremony, and we can also expect to see them take in some Olympic tennis games!

What Those Medals Are ReallyWorth

According to CNN, An Olympic gold medal is only 1.34% gold! Melted down, it would be worth about $650, while a silver medal (which is 93% silver and 7% copper) would be worth $335, and a bronze medal (mostly copper) would be worth about $5.

Designer Uniforms

Designers are going for the Olympic gold! First, Ralph Lauren announced his plans to create Olympic Village and closing ceremony looks for Team USA, then Stella McCartney unveiled her athletic gear for Team Great Britain. And Giorgio Armani is dressing Italy’s athletes in sleek white and midnight blue sportswear.

Gold-Medal-Worthy Fashions

In honor of the anticipated event, designers are rolling out athletic-inspired products that go way beyond leotards and running shoes. From Miu Miu‘s sexy gold, silver, and bronze heels, to Ralph Lauren‘s all-American Opening Ceremony looks, and limited edition tees from Gap and Karl Lagerfeld, we’ve rounded up our top shopping picks to get you in the Olympic spirit.

Women to Watch

For the first time in the history of the games, women outnumber men on the U.S. Olympic Team. From 16-year-old gymnastics newcomer Gabby Douglas, to track and field star Lolo Jones and beach volleyball Olympian Jennifer Kessy. Way to go girls!

Performances: One Direction, The Who, Jessie J, and More!

The Olympics are set to close with a two-hour concert, featuring One Direction, The Who, Jessie J, Russell Brand (performing hits from The Beatles and The Sex Pistols), Annie Lenox, Ray Davies, Kaiser Chiefs, and more, The Daily Mail reports.

Star Trends Worth Trying

24 Jul

These are the hottest fashion fads in Hollywood – and we tracked them all down for less!

A few well-placed zippers on simple black pants (Rose Byrne is wearing black J Brand jeans and Gwen Stefani is in Rag & Bone Exclusive for Intermix skinnies) take the weekend staple from boring to badass.

You can get the same awesome look for less at for around $66.00

Cheat on your basic black pumps with the color-block wedges (comfier than heels!) seen on Jessica Alba and Elizabeth Banks. Our favorite thing about the stars’ looks is that they embraced brights from head-to-toe, though newbies to these funky shoes may want to keep their ensembles slightly more monochromatic.

You can steal the look from Bloomingdale’s, the brand here is Lucky Brand Jeans and they cost around $40.00

The flattering length and cut is all business, but the bright, juicy color is all fun – and looks great with a (faux!) tan. Lea Michele (in Versace) and Eva Longoria (in Victoria Beckham) wisely know to pair the ultra-saturated citrus shade with neutral accessories.

You can get a similar look from Ralph Lauren for $124.00

Stars including Katy Perry and Diane Kruger are getting a kick out of these killer (literally?) shoes, both by Christian Louboutin and studded with spikes. The two stars have the right idea, teaming their ultra-edgy footwear with looks that are 100 percent ladylike for a cool contrast.

You can get this Sam Edelman  From for $149

Or you can also try this look from Urban Outfitters for $145

The Best Face Cleansers

23 Jul

When it comes to the art of face washing, us ladies take it pretty seriously. We carefully select our skin care products and practically give ourselves a facial in the morning and night. We do this ritual in the morning to look and feel refreshed and awake (even when we likely got less than six hours of sleep). And then we wash the day off of our faces in the evening, removing all traces of makeup, as well as any dirt and excess oil.

But a cleanser is a cleanser, right? Don’t they all do the same job? Hardly. There are formulas for all different skin types from sensitive to acne-prone to combination to dry to oily and even those of us with rosacea. You can choose from bars or pumps, mild or deep cleansing and take your pick from exfoliating, creamy, foamy, or even frothy. You’ll see that these skin care products will help you put your best face forward every day.

Clinique Liquid Facial Soap, $15

Average rating: 8.7
Why: “I have tried many, many facial cleansers and now have been using this exclusively since I first tried it a couple of years ago. I have combination skin that is prone to both dry patches and blackheads/clogged pores. This is the only cleanser I have found that does a wonderful job of keeping my pores clean, but does not strip my face and leave it crepey or scaly looking. It is by far the best that I have tried. I am totally satisfied with it!”  Betty P.

Mary Kay Creamy Cleanser 2, $12

Average Rating: 8.8
Why: “Until I found Mary Kay Creamy Cleanser 2, I thought I had dry skin. My face used to feel tight after washing it, but since [I started using this], my skin is always soft and moist. In fact, I have combination skin type. I’ve always been very allergic so before I found Mary Kay Creamy Cleanser 2, I couldn’t use anything without getting ‘itchy.’ I’ve been using it for at least 24 years now and I’m now 50 and everyone thinks my 14-year-old daughter is my sister!” Claudia P.

 Ambi Complexion Cleansing Bar, $1.99

Average Rating: 8.9

Why: “This cleanser leaves your face refreshed and revitalized without removing your natural moisture. An excellent product with a great fragrance also.” Shanita

Philosophy Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser, $20

Average Rating: 9.1

Why: “The size of a dime is all you need to dispense from the bottle in order to remove every trace of makeup, dirt and the most stubborn, sometimes hard-to-remove, waterproof eye makeup. This cleanser has never failed me. It always leaves my skin feeling totally clean, fresh and not dry or stripped in any way. I try different cleansers, well, because I am a beauty blogger, but always go back to Purity. The scent is very light, and I truly look forward to using this at the end of the day to help my skin feel totally refreshed and totally clean.” MakeupSearcher

Dermalogica mediBac Clearing Skin Wash, $33

Average Rating: 9.1

Why: “After the first use I could tell a difference in my skin. It is awesome! I have extremely oily adult acne skin and after using this wash, the tone and texture of my skin was fabulous. The smell is pretty awful, but with results like these how can I hold that against the best cleanser I have ever used? And trust me I have used them all.” Kate L

Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar, $4.49

Why: “I have VERY sensitive skin — prone to dermatitis, redness, dryness, etc. You’d never know it, though, because of my skin care regimen. This is the only brand that lets me keep my skin smooth and dewy every day.” — Rachel Moran

The 9 Best Rated Face Scrubs

23 Jul

Newsflash: If it’s glowing, radiant skin you’re after, you need to exfoliate.

According to doctors Gina and Sid Dinesh, dermatologists in Beverly Hills, Calif., adding exfoliation to your skin care routine helps the natural shedding process of skin and encourages healthier, smoother, more even-toned, and clearer skin. Some of the big beauty benefits? Acne prevention, smaller pores, wrinkle reduction, and it even helps all those fancy moisturizers actually absorb into the skin.

However, it can be overwhelming to sift through the hundreds of scrubs and exfoliation products out there to find the best one, so we’ve done the work for you. We rounded up a complete list of the best face scrubs according to Total Beauty readers. Now you can say hello to that gorgeous skin just waiting to be revealed.

No. 6: Philosophy The Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash, $25 average reader rating: 9.0
Why: A reader that dubs herself the “exfoliating queen” calls this the “microdermabrasion scrub that takes the cake,” helping with everything from acne discoloration to dry, rough patches on skin. Readers say this product diminishes sunspots and fine lines, and one woman noticed that the pink in her cheeks returned, putting an end to her “blush-wearing days.” One reader calls this the “equivalent of microdermabrasion, minus the suffering” while another admits she would have paid twice the amount this product costs, because she is thankful to have “finally found a product that makes me swoon.” Turns out the men can have at this product too: One reader’s husband uses it shame-free.

No. 5: Clinique Exfoliating Scrub, $18.50 average reader rating: 9.1
Why: Readers bestow a bevy of compliments on this product, referring to it as “a perfect 10,” and a “superstar scrub” that offers results in as little as two weeks. It reportedly “has more exfoliating beads than any other scrub” and takes care of everything from getting rid of dead skin to removing “nasty flakes.” One reader gives it this fairytale description: “It magically dusts away dull-looking skin and transforms your beautiful face into a masterpiece.”

No. 4: Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser, $35 average reader rating: 9.2
Why: Readers love this product for its ability to “exfoliate without redness or irritation” and call it “a super product to whisk away dead skin cells.” An added bonus? Several reviewers have noted that it also helps aid in the prevention of breakouts, and as one woman points out, “It leaves skin with a glow that people notice all day.”

No. 3: Benefit “honey…snap out of it” Scrub, $21 average reader rating: 9.5
Why: Some readers refer to this as the “best exfoliator on the market” because it offers “just enough roughness to get the job done without being uncomfortable.” One woman even uses it as a face mask after she finishes with her exfoliating routine, making her skin “softer and smoother.” Several readers also say that it “smells good” and is “moisturizing,” while others applaud it for being “not too abrasive.”

No. 2: The Body Shop Seaweed Pore-Cleansing Facial Exfoliator, $14.50 average reader rating: 9.6
Why: If oil is your enemy, our readers say this is the exfoliator for you, as it helps skin “stay matte longer than usual” while reducing pore size and leaves “skin glowing.” It’s the “perfect pick-me-up to dull skin” as one reader puts it, while another says that it’s “gentle enough to not completely rip your skin to shreds but does its job,” ultimately leaving you with “soft and velvety clean skin.”

No. 1: Cosmedicine Medi-Morphosis Self-Adjusting Exfoliator, $24.99 average reader rating: 9.8
Why: This scrub is nicknamed “grains with brains” by one reader, who saw her pores shrink by twelve percent after using it. This product is reportedly so thorough that one woman even says, “I can literally feel the air in each pore.” The good news, according to our readers, is that one can’t over-exfoliate with this scrub because the beads will start to dissolve before that even happens, yet results are “highly effective without feeling like you’ve used a brillo pad on your skin.” One celebrity makeup artist says this exfoliator is a hit among his model clientele for being “gentle” and “silky.” The only complaint one reader has? “I want to use it every day, not just the recommended twice a week.”

6 Must Have Beauty Secrets From Around The World

23 Jul

From Brazil to India, it turns out the fountain of youth is often found in the kitchen. Here are some of celebrity nutritionist Cynthia Pasquella’s favorite beauty secrets from around the world.

Secret No. 1: Coconut oil Coconut oil is super moisturizing and can be used as a deep cleanser for skin pores as it contains natural antibacterial ingredients to help clear up acne. Women in Belize have long used it to ease fine lines and wrinkles and to soften dry skin. Coconut oil also acts as a natural sunscreen, protecting skin even further. Ingesting this amazing food improves circulation in the skin, restores elasticity and can even banish under-eye circles.

You can pick up unrefined, organic coconut oil from almost any grocery store. Dr. Bronner’s Fresh-Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil can be purchased online for $10.99.

Secret No. 2: Noni juice The Polynesians use noni juice for its powerful anti-aging properties that help you feel younger and make your skin glow. Noni juice also can help lower inflammation throughout your body.

You can find Lakewood Organic Noni Juice at stores and online for $9.29.

Secret No. 3: Ginger Throughout India women of all ages take a few moments each morning to lovingly shred a little ginger and mix it with a spoonful of honey. After adding water, they savor the sweetness of the honey combined with the gentle warmth of the fresh ginger. These two simple ingredients are believed to reduce lines in the skin.

You can buy whole ginger roots at most grocery stores.

Secret No. 4:  Guanábana (Soursop) The Guanábana fruit, native to the Caribbean and South America, is known for its rich, aromatic flavor and nourishing benefits. Guanábana contains a healthful blend of nutrients, intended to help promote more beautiful skin. It’s rich in vitamins B and C, which help boost immunity and nourish the skin.

If you’d like to give guanábana a try, you can buy Borba Slimming Chocolate Chews for $19.99 or Borba Smart and Sexy Omega-3 Bursts for $14.99.

Secret No. 5: Black cumin seeds Native to south and southwest Asia, black cumin seeds are a powerful antioxidant. They’re beneficial for strengthening hair and nails and treating skin conditions like psoriasis, acne and eczema. The seeds contain a rich variety of vitamins including A, B1, B2, B6, C and Niacin, as well as an array of minerals including calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, selenium, copper, phosphorus and zinc.

Intelligent Nutrients’ Intellimune Tablets contain black cumin seed meal and cost $45.

Secret No. 6: Grape-seed extract Regularly used by French women to keep their skin beautiful and ageless, grape-seed extract contains powerful antioxidants. Wine and grape-seed oil cannot compare in antioxidant potency to grape-seed extract. For example, you would need to eat 1 to 1.5 pounds of seeded table grapes to receive the antioxidant benefits you would get from 50 mg of grape-seed extract.

Murad’s Youth Builder Dietary Supplement contains grape-seed extract and costs $49.50 for a 30-day supply.

Using Colored Eyeliner

21 Jul

The end of the summer is  near, but it’s not over yet. There’s still time for colorful fun. I noticed people are talking about colored eyeliner and I decided to take a look. I think it gives a fun twist you your makeup specially now that bold and neon color are so trenndy.

The best way to find the best color eyeliner for you is by using your eye color as your guide—not your skin tone. Some colors make certain eye colors really pop, so here’s a little handy-dandy guide to help you figure out what color is best for you!

If you have brown eyes… My personal favorite for brown eyes is purple or yellow. Brown eyes also look really pretty with shades of green (like turquoise), blue, gold, and copper too.

If you have blue eyes… Blue eyes looks gorgeous with orangey, rose or bronze shades. It’s always a good idea to use a contrasting color with blue eyes since most of the time blue eyeliner can actually take away from the blue color of your eyes. Needless to say, some blues do work—but it’s just a matter of testing it out with your eyes and seeing if it washes your eye color out too much. More often than not, artificial shades of blues look really awkward when paired with a beautifully natural blue eye—so beware! You can also use purple colors such as plum and lavender on blue eyes.

If you have green eyes… You can use green on green eyes, but just make sure that the liner isn’t taking away from your natural color. Blue and purple liner also looks really pretty with green eyes. If your eyes have little specks of brown in them, gold liner looks nice too. My favorite shade for green eyes though is burgundy kind of what Rihanna is wearing above.

If you have hazel eyes… You can wear the same colors someone with brown or green eyes can wear. Golds, purples, apricot shades, dark greens, coppery bronzes also look really good with hazel eyes.
No matter what eye color you have…These colors will work for you:

  • Navy
  • Charcoal
  • Chocolate Brown
  • Black

If you’re going to wear colored eyeliner, wear a neutral eyeshadow and then line your eyes with a fun color. If you’re a bit more daring, coordinate your liner with your shadow for a super colorful and fashion forward look! But, if your eyes are going to be making a statement, keep the rest of your makeup natural and subtler looking.
So, what color liner are you going to try first?
